Stoats are one of New Zealand's most effective introduced predators and have had a devastating impact on many native bird populations since their introduction in the late nineteenth century.

They are agile, intelligent hunters that prey on eggs, chicks and adult birds, particularly species that nest on or close to the ground. Coastal birds, wetland species and nesting shorebirds are especially vulnerable to stoat predation.

Stoats have been sighted in the Waikawa Beach area from time to time, although they are notoriously difficult to trap and monitor due to their large territories, low population densities and cautious behaviour.

The presence of stoats serves as an important reminder of the ongoing pressures faced by native wildlife and the value of protecting and restoring habitat wherever possible.
