About us
The Waikawa Beach Environment Group was formed in 2022 and comprises of a group of like-minded people with the passion, drive and energy to enhance our natural environment and to leave Waikawa beach better protected than when we arrived. In collaboration with the Horowhenua District Council we are focused on growing our knowledge and influence to deliver stronger biodiversity and sustainability outcomes for Waikawa Beach.
Our mission is to protect and enhance our natural environment by identifying threats to our native flora and fauna from invasive plant and animal species which threaten our biodiversity. We advocate on behalf of our community on environmental issues, including water quality, river management plans, beach bylaws and policies and regulation.
We believe in actions, not just words. We plant walkways, remove noxious plants and identify pests and endangered species. We log this information on databases, including our own website, in support of other stakeholders who require data driven information in support of their own programmes.
We engage broadly, representing the views of our community and presenting them to Council. We participate on planning and steering committees tasked with working on the environmental issues our community faces and we collaborate with experts, including councils, government departments, environmental groups and independent experts to broaden our knowledge.
