Fleabane

Fleabane is an increasingly common invasive weed within coastal environments, disturbed ground and open sandy areas.

While the small white flowers can appear harmless, the plant produces large quantities of wind-blown seed and can quickly establish dense colonies if left unmanaged.

At Waikawa Beach, fleabane competes with native dune and wetland species for space, light and moisture, reducing the ability of indigenous plants to establish and thrive.

Early identification and control are important to prevent small infestations becoming much larger problems in future years.
