Fantail
Pīwakawaka
Pīwakawaka are one of New Zealand's most friendly and inquisitive native birds, often following gardeners and volunteers as they search for insects disturbed by footsteps and spades. Their distinctive fanned tail and energetic flight make them favourites with many people.
Pīwakawaka thrive in areas with healthy insect populations and a variety of native vegetation, making them excellent indicators of a healthy and functioning ecosystem.
They are often among the first birds to appear during planting and maintenance days.
