With their unmistakable song and distinctive white throat tuft, Tūī are among New Zealand's most recognisable native birds. They play an important role as pollinators, feeding on nectar from native plants and helping many species reproduce naturally.

Native trees and shrubs such as Harakeke, Kōhūhū and Kānuka provide important food sources for Tūī, particularly as restoration projects mature and flowering increases throughout the landscape.

Seeing and hearing more Tūī around Waikawa Beach is one of the many long-term goals of ecological restoration.
