The Common Pheasant is an introduced species that has become a familiar sight throughout rural New Zealand and is regularly seen around Waikawa Beach paddocks, stream margins and wetland edges.

Often heard before they are seen, male pheasants are well known for their distinctive call and striking plumage, while the more subtly coloured females rely on camouflage to remain hidden amongst long grass and vegetation.

Pheasants thrive in landscapes that provide a mix of open feeding areas and dense cover for shelter and nesting, making the mosaic of paddocks, wetlands and vegetation around Waikawa Beach ideal habitat.

While not native, they have become part of the rich mix of birdlife that contributes to the unique character of our local environment.
