Shags are a familiar sight around Waikawa Beach and can often be seen perched with wings spread wide to dry after diving for fish.

Several species occur around New Zealand waterways and estuaries, where they play an important role as fish predators within healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Their distinctive silhouette and fishing behaviour make them one of our easiest waterbirds to recognise.
