The Green and Golden Bell Frog is an introduced species that has become extremely well established around Waikawa Beach and is responsible for much of the familiar evening chorus heard around ponds, drains, wetlands and waterways during the warmer months. 

 

Originally introduced to New Zealand from Australia, these frogs have adapted well to our local environment and are now a recognised part of the Waikawa soundscape. Like many wetland species, they benefit from healthy waterways, clean water and well-connected habitats.

While not native, their presence highlights the importance of protecting and restoring the wetlands and freshwater environments that support a wide range of wildlife.
