The Kāhu, or Harrier Hawk, is one of Waikawa Beach's most familiar and impressive birds of prey and is often seen soaring gracefully above paddocks, wetlands, dunes and waterways on its distinctive V-shaped wings.

An important predator and scavenger, Kāhu help maintain healthy ecosystems by feeding on rodents, rabbits, insects and carrion. Their role in removing dead animals and helping control pest species makes them an important part of the natural balance within both rural and coastal environments.

Kāhu are a regular and much-loved sight around Waikawa Beach and serve as a reminder that healthy ecosystems rely not only on the species we protect, but also on the predators and scavengers that help keep nature in balance.
