Black Swan
Kakīānau

The Black Swan, also known as Kakīānau, are a familiar and elegant sight on many New Zealand waterways and is regularly seen around Waikawa Beach.

Although not native to New Zealand, it have become a well-established part of our freshwater landscapes and is often seen grazing quietly on aquatic plants or cruising across ponds and estuaries with their cygnets in tow.

Like many species, the Black Swan thrives best where waterways are healthy and food sources are plentiful.
