Katipō Spider
The Katipō is one of New Zealand's most famous native spiders and is found almost exclusively within coastal dune environments. Traditionally associated with driftwood, dune vegetation and the upper beach, Katipō spiders build their webs close to the ground where they feed on insects and other small invertebrates.
Although venomous, Katipō spiders are shy and rarely encountered by people, preferring to avoid disturbance wherever possible.
Habitat loss and competition from introduced spider species have led to significant declines in Katipō populations throughout New Zealand, making the protection and restoration of healthy dune ecosystems increasingly important for their survival.
