Kererū are one of New Zealand's most iconic native birds and are becoming an increasingly common sight around Waikawa Beach as native planting projects mature and provide more food and shelter.

These large, beautiful pigeons play a vital role within New Zealand ecosystems as one of the few birds capable of swallowing and dispersing the seeds of larger native trees and shrubs. In many ways, Kererū help plant the forests of the future.

Their distinctive wingbeats and occasionally clumsy landings are familiar to anyone lucky enough to have them visit their garden.

Native species such as Karamū, Kōhūhū, Harakeke and many other fruiting and flowering plants provide valuable food sources throughout the year.

For WBEG, seeing increasing numbers of Kererū around Waikawa Beach is one of the clearest signs that habitat restoration efforts are beginning to make a real difference.
