The Royal Spoonbill, also known as Kōtuku-ngutupapa, is a striking white bird, easily recognised by its distinctive spoon-shaped bill which it sweeps from side to side through shallow water to catch small fish, insects and aquatic creatures.

Although once considered rare visitors to New Zealand, numbers have increased significantly in recent decades and they are now occasionally seen visiting Waikawa Beach wetlands, ponds and estuary areas.

Seeing these graceful birds feeding in the shallows is always a memorable experience and a reminder of the importance of protecting healthy freshwater habitats.
