Royal Spoonbills are striking white birds easily recognised by their distinctive spoon-shaped bills, which they sweep from side to side through shallow water to catch small fish, insects and aquatic creatures.

Although once considered rare visitors to New Zealand, their numbers have increased significantly in recent decades and they are now occasionally seen visiting Waikawa Beach wetlands, ponds and estuary areas.

Seeing these graceful birds feeding in the shallows is always a memorable experience and a reminder of the importance of protecting healthy freshwater habitats.
