The Grey Teal, also known as Tētē Moroiti. is one of New Zealand's most widespread native ducks, commonly found on wetlands, lagoons, estuaries, lakes and slow-flowing rivers.

 

These small, agile ducks are often seen in pairs or small flocks, quietly dabbling in shallow water for aquatic plants, seeds, insects and small freshwater invertebrates. Although naturally shy, they readily take advantage of healthy wetland habitats that provide food, shelter and safe nesting sites.

 

Their soft grey plumage, chestnut-coloured eyes and distinctive whistling calls make them a familiar and welcome sight throughout New Zealand's freshwater environments.

 

Protecting and restoring wetlands helps ensure the Grey Teal continues to flourish for future generations.
