The Silvereye is one of Waikawa Beach's most familiar garden birds, often seen flitting through shrubs and trees in small, busy groups.​ Interestingly, their Māori name, Tauhou, means "new arrival" as they are believed to have naturally arrived in New Zealand from Australia during the nineteenth century.

Silvereyes feed on insects, nectar and berries and benefit greatly from native planting projects that provide food and shelter throughout the year.

As WBEG's restoration projects mature, species such as Tauhou are among the first birds to take advantage of the growing habitat they provide.
