Giant Iceplant
Giant Iceplant is a fast-growing succulent that was originally introduced as an ornamental plant and for erosion control but has since become invasive in many coastal environments.
Its sprawling growth habit allows it to quickly form dense mats that smother native vegetation and prevent indigenous plants from establishing naturally. Over time, these dense infestations can reduce biodiversity and alter the natural character of dune ecosystems.

While Giant Iceplant can appear attractive when in flower and may seem beneficial because it covers bare sand, it does not provide the same ecological value as native dune species such as Spinifex, Pīngao, Tauhinu and Sand Coprosma.
At Waikawa Beach, the long-term goal is to encourage native dune species that are better adapted to supporting local wildlife, stabilising dunes naturally and creating resilient coastal ecosystems.
Residents wishing to retain groundcover on coastal properties may wish to consider native alternatives that provide both erosion control and biodiversity benefits.
