Toetoe is a graceful native grass commonly found along waterways, wetlands and coastal margins throughout New Zealand. Its tall flowering plumes sway in the breeze, creating one of the country's most recognisable natural landscapes.

Its extensive root system helps stabilise soils and reduce erosion, while the dense foliage provides shelter and nesting habitat for native birds, insects and other wildlife. Toetoe also plays an important role in restoring natural wetland and riparian ecosystems.

At Waikawa Beach, Toetoe is planted throughout our freshwater and coastal restoration projects where it adds height, texture and resilience to the landscape. It is also an attractive feature in larger gardens, particularly where a natural coastal or wetland aesthetic is desired.
