Knobby Club Rush, also known as Wīwī, is a hardy native sedge found in coastal areas, particularly on sand dunes, sandy margins and around the backs of estuaries. Its upright, rush-like stems and distinctive rounded brown flower heads make it easy to recognise.

Its spreading roots help bind loose sand and stabilise more established parts of the dune system. The dense growth also provides shelter for insects and contributes valuable structure and diversity among lower-growing dune plants.

At Waikawa Beach, WBEG plants Knobby Club Rush in dune restoration areas where conditions are drier and more exposed. It complements species such as Spinifex, Pīngao and Sand Coprosma in building a more resilient native coastal habitat.
