Cabbage Tree, also known as Tī Kōuka, is one of New Zealand's most recognisable native trees and is commonly found growing beside wetlands, streams and damp lowland areas. Its distinctive trunk and dramatic crown make it a familiar feature across the landscape.

Fragrant flowers attract a wide variety of native insects, while the berries provide an important seasonal food source for birds. Its extensive root system also helps stabilise streambanks and wet soils.

Widely planted throughout Waikawa Beach's freshwater restoration projects, Tī Kōuka contributes to healthier waterways while adding height, structure and biodiversity. It is also a hardy and attractive tree for larger local gardens.
