Ngaio

Ngaio is one of New Zealand's signature coastal trees, naturally thriving on windswept shorelines where few other trees can tolerate salt spray and strong coastal conditions. Its glossy leaves and spreading branches provide year-round shelter close to the sea.

The tree produces small flowers and berries that support native birds and insects while creating valuable habitat within coastal ecosystems. Its resilience makes it an important component of healthy dune and coastal margins.

Ngaio grows naturally around Waikawa Beach and has become an important species in local restoration projects. It is also an excellent choice for coastal gardens, providing shelter, habitat and an attractive evergreen feature.
