Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are a familiar sight in many New Zealand gardens and rural areas and are occasionally encountered around Waikawa Beach.

Although often viewed fondly, hedgehogs are introduced predators that feed on insects, lizards, eggs and chicks of ground-nesting birds.

In healthy ecosystems, even small predators can have a significant impact on vulnerable native species, particularly those that nest on beaches, in dunes and around wetlands. Protecting biodiversity means understanding the role all species play within our environment and managing impacts where appropriate.
